Bangladesh: Project for Strengthening Health Systems through Organizing Communities
Country: People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Contract Party: JICA, Project Duration: From November, 2020 to August, 2022
Compared with 1990, the maternal mortality rate (MMR) in the People's Republic of Bangladesh (Bangladesh) has dramatically improved from 574 per 100,000 live births to 176 (per 100,000 live births), and the under 5 mortality rate (U5MR) from 144 per 1000 live births to 41 per 1,000 live births (World Bank, 2015), but both still show high and require more efforts to achieve the goals in SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) MMR (70 per 100,000 live births) and U5MR )25 per 1,000 live births) by 2030. In addition, in Bangladesh, due to the changes of eating habits and life styles, and increase of smokers, 59% causes of deaths are Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) such as cardio-vascular diseases and cancer, and the deaths by 4 major NCDs among economically active generations between 30 to 70 years old account for 18 % of national deaths. Thus, NCDs are recognized as new issues in the health sectors of the country (WHO, 2015).
Based on the background, it has become necessary to strengthen both sides of the service beneficiaries’ needs promotion through encouraging NCDs preventive activities by community and system making of medical services for test, diagnose, and treatment. This project started the support on July 29, 2017, after signing R/D on May 28, 2017. It was under JICA’s direct operation until November, 2020, but TAC has been the single contractor from December, 2020 to July 28, 2022, with the project outputs shown below.
